Fall semester is winding down, and Wittenberg students are gearing up for finals week, taking place Monday, Dec. 12, through Friday, Dec. 16.
To assure students obtain the best grades possible on their last exams and projects of 2016, academic and personal support services are available through the COMPASS Center located in Thomas Library. To sign up for a service, students can stop by the center to inquire about a meeting time, or students can fill out a form found on the student success webpage. Once a request is received via website, COMPASS workers will respond within 24 hours to schedule an appointment.
“This week, we have met with several students to help talk through and develop a plan related to study time, strategies and connecting with other campus resources for all final assignments, projects, papers and exams,” Jon Duraj, associate dean of Students for Student Success & Retention, said.
These COMPASS services are offered at any time of the year for students, but are especially valuable leading up to finals week. After finals are over and the spring semester begins, COMPASS will meet with students to get academic and personal success plans in place. This allows students to come up with a game plan to achieve academic goals after reflecting on what worked and what did not during the past semester.
“Having that plan in advance allows a student to prepare, avoid distractions and stay focused on completing the semester as strong as possible,” Duraj said.
The set up of the COMPASS Center itself is a useful tool. Small group study rooms, whiteboard walls and large group study tables provide spots for students to host preparations for group projects. Study sessions are abundant and encouraged for use.
Another popular event during finals week will be held on Sunday, Dec. 11. From 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.: Student Development and numerous Wittenberg faculty and staff will be hosting the twenty-fourth Annual Midnight Breakfast. The event is free for all Witt students, and is a great tradition that offers late-night study fuel as students head into finals.
After Midnight Breakfast, students can head back to Thomas Library for some more cramming. The campus library will extend its hours past their normal closing time, as usual during finals week. The building will be open from 8 a.m. until 1:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday, but hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, the last day of exams.
Students can find detailed information about exam dates and times for each class on the Office of the Registrar webpage.
