Wittenberg’s women’s soccer team defeated Ohio Wesleyan by the score of 1-0, both teams fought hard despite the chilly weather on Wednesday night at Edwards-Maurer Field. The devastating goal was scored off a corner kick by Sydney Artis, ’22, and headed by Emily Wile, ’22. The crowd and the team rejoiced when the ball soared into the back of the net.
This game was important for position standing in the NCAC conference. By the Tigers winning this game they move into a tie for third place with Kenyon College. Women’s soccer team overall records improve to 5-8-3 and 3-2-2 in conference play. The Battling Bishops overall record is now 7-8-1 and their conference record falls to 3-4-0.
The Tigers would like to defend their NCAC championship they won last season and receive another bid into the NCAA tournament.
“[It was a] great win, it showed how our record does not define who we are, and it does not define how well we play together,” Lindsey Kroeger, ’21, said.
This was a very offensive game despite only one goal being scored. The game ended with 28 shots being fired. Wittenberg took 17 shots, 16 of them game during regulation while Ohio Wesleyan shot only 11 for the entire game, eight in regulation and three in over time.
The pace of the game was very fast for both teams, majority of the time one of the teams has possession of the ball they would advance it deep into each other side of the field.  Both goalies played extremely well, they both made excellent saves multiple times throughout the game. The Ohio Wesleyan goalie recorded eight saves while Kelly Corbin, ’20, had four saves.
While the game was very physical it was a very clean one. Only 13 fouls were committed.
“The team feels great. It was an awesome win and a complete team effort. The energy was at an all time high,” said Jasmine Evans, ’21, after the game.
“Our mindset against Hiram is to finish our season on a high note and to use it to prepare for the conference tournament,” stated Evans.
The Tigers then played a home game on Saturday, senior night, against Hiram College for the last NCAC regular season game of the 2018 season, before beginning post-season play.
