Sophomore outside hitter, Jackson Tyler, wants to be the missing puzzle piece the Wittenberg Men’s Volleyball team needs to win the program’s first National Championship.

Tyler grew up in Noblesville, Ind. and began playing volleyball in the ninth grade, because his family has a very rich athletic background. His father first brought up the idea of playing volleyball because it was fun and fast-paced. It didn’t take long for Tyler to learn how to play; after only playing for one season he earned all-state and all-academic honors as well as being named team captain for his senior season.

Coming to Wittenberg was an easy decision for Tyler. Since he arrived on campus last fall, Tyler has been an important part to the Tigers success and has had one goal in mind: doing everything in his power to help his team win their first National Championship.

“I came to Wittenberg because not only does it have a good job outlook, but the competitive athletes and the professors willingness to help me succeed is why I fell in love with the place,” Tyler said. “I plan to always have volleyball in my life; this team is helping guide me to a brighter future.”

Tyler’s athletic career has had its fair share of obstacles due to injuries, but because of them, he has learned how to put the team before himself. This is just one reason why he is one of the most consistent players on the team. Appearing in over 30 games, he has had 65 kills, 50 digs and 8 blocks. It is obvious that all the countless hours of hard work has paid off for Tyler and the Tigers.

Balancing athletics and academics can be very difficult for many student athletes, however, Tyler admits that he doesn’t face this problem very often. He realizes how important volleyball is to him and that’s why he strives to be excellent in every aspect of his life, so that he can continue to play the sport that he loves.

Tyler believes that the thing that keeps him going is life is volleyball. It has taught him mental toughness, commitment and persistence.

He has earned his spot on the team and hopes to play a key role in helping the team win the NCAC championship and earn a bid to the national tournament at the end of April. Until then, Tyler and the rest of the Men’s volleyball team will continue regular season action on April 6 at 7 p.m. in Pam Evans Smith arena as they take on the Cardinals of North Central College.
