At 6’6”, Scott Masin, the starting center for the Wittenberg men’s basketball team, is a mountain of a man. But, add in some of the best technique, post moves and athleticism in all of Division III basketball and you’ve got a potential All-American.
Masin, a senior from New Carlisle, OH and Bethel High School, has been the dominating force for the Tigers inside the last two seasons. This season, Masin is averaging 16.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, while shooting almost 70 percent from the field and dishing out the second most assists on the team. Masin is coming off what was possibly the best game of his career last Saturday. Masin demolished North Coast Athletic Conference rival Allegheny for 28 points and nine rebounds on 11-15 shooting, including a thunderous dunk.
As a junior, Masin led the Tigers in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.9 and 9.2 per game, respectively. He also finished twentieth in the country with a whopping 13 double-doubles. At the end of the season, Masin was named First Team All-NCAC, Third Team All-Great Lakes Region and also made the NCAC All-Tournament Team. He also served as team captain and was named team MVP.
As a sophomore, Masin gained experience behind a stellar senior class while still contributing greatly. He averaged 4.4 point and 3.3 rebounds per game in only 10 minutes a game. That year team made it all the way to the Elite Eight, giving Masin and the rest of the upperclassmen this season valuable experience as they attempt to navigate the NCAA tournament.
Masin is really enjoying a senior season that has seen Wittenberg race out to a (6-1) record overall and a (3-0) mark in conference play. The Tigers are currently ranked 16th nationally and should continue to dominate the competition until January match-ups with Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster. If Masin can continue to dominate the competition he should be well on his way to being named the NCAC Player of the Year and a possible All-American
“The way we are sharing the ball and not caring who scores or gets the credit for it is really a fun thing to be a part of,” Masin said.
Off the court, Masin is an extremely active member of the Wittenberg community. A biology major who plans to attend graduate school to become a physical therapist, Masin is an officer for the Athletes for Christ, has done extensive work with Habitat for Humanity, and has served as a peer mentor and orientation assistant for underclassmen.
