After defeating Kenyon College 1-0 in the NCAC conference championship, the Wittenberg women’s soccer team was selected to the NCAA Tournament and traveled to St. Louis, Miss. to play in the NCAA Regional Tournament. This is the second consecutive season that the Tigers made it to the NCAA Tournament.
In the first round, Wittenberg played the Thomas Moore Saints. Thomas Moore entered the tournament with a record of 15-4-1 after winning their seventh-straight President’s Athletic Conference title. The teams got to play on Francis Field, which hosted the 1904 Olympics.
The Tigers fought hard to defeat Thomas Moore in stunning fashion in overtime, ending in a final score of 3-2. The Tigers offense was led by Kaitlyn Krieg, ’21, who recorded her first collegiate hat trick. Krieg was assisted by Leah Soutar, ’18, on two of her goals. Kelly Corbin, ’20, made her first start as goalie, making three saves on five shots on goal from the Saints. The Saints were the first team to score 14 minutes into the game, and scored a second time within the first two minutes of the second half.
After this win, Wittenberg boasted an eight-game winning streak. The next day, Wittenberg played host Washington (Mo.), falling by a final score of 1-0 by a late goal from the Saints.
