It was a thrilling weekend for the Wittenberg Lady Tigers basketball team. They had back-to-back games this weekend, going up against the Hiram Terriers on Friday, February 7, and the Allegheny Alligators on Saturday, February 8. Going into the weekend the Lady Tigers held a record of (10-8) overall and (5-5) in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Hiram was their first foe, a team who has struggled throughout much of the 2013-2014 season thus far with records of (5-16) and (1-11). In this matchup, the Lady Tigers were able to cruise to an easy victory over the Terriers, with a final score of 93-54. The Tigers were led by senior Amber Rice with 28 points, junior Heather Schroeder who tallied 18 points, and freshman Michelle Brunswick who grabbed 10 rebounds. The Lady Tigers had an outstanding game shooting 59 percent from the field and 60 percent from behind the three point arc.
On Saturday, the Lady Tigers looked to continue their winning streak against a very evenly matched opponent. Allegheny entered with a record of (12-8) in overall play and (6-5) in conference play. The score of this game remained very close throughout, with 10 lead changes and nine ties. The last tie of the game came with 38 seconds left in the second half, when Schroeder knocked down two free throws to tie the score at 61 apiece. After the free throws, the Lady Tigers stopped the Lady Gators on the defensive end and gained possession with a jump ball. With little time left in the game, Schroeder advanced the ball up the court with a long pass to junior Katelyn Haralamos. Haralamos caught the ball with three seconds left, drove the lane and shot a runner in the lane that went through the basket just as time expired. The Lady Tigers won the game with a final score of 63-61.
On her late game heroics, Haralamos stated, “it was pretty, it was great, I don’t know what else to say, Heather had one heck of a pass.” The pair of juniors not only helped lead the team to victory in the final moments of the game, but filled up the stat sheet as well. Schroeder led the Lady Tigers in points with a total of 17, and Haralamos was right behind her with 15 total points as well as five rebounds and four steals. Rice also had an impressive performance with eight points, five rebounds, and five assists.
The Tigers finished the weekend with a record of (12-8) and (7-5) in the NCAC and look to continue their win streak on Wednesday, February 12, when they take on top ranked DePauw.
