Wittenberg seniors need not panic; opportunities for post-grad employment may be easier to find than most would believe.
Director of Wittenberg Career Services, Wendy Smiseck, weighs in on what Forbes considers the best companies for entry level jobs as well as what salary.com considers the entry level jobs with significant earning potential.
Smiseck says that Wittenberg alumni have worked for many, if not all, of the top 20 Forbes companies, at least within the last seven years. She speculates that these companies have made Forbes’ list due to their growth, abundance of opportunities, and capacity to hire a lot of people.
Of course, not all grads will stay with a particular company for long. “Some just want a job to fill a gap year,” says Smiseck.
Many large companies, including Enterprise, Sherwin-Williams, TQL, and Verizon participated in the Career Fest in early February. Some might even come to Wittenberg’s Career Fair this spring.
Enterprise, in particular, consistently recruits on campus. An employee of Enterprise would do everything, including cleaning the cars.
A surprising number of opportunities are relatively local. The national headquarters for Speedway is in Enon, Ohio. “Most people would never think to work for them, but they hire people for everything: management, marketing, graphic design,” said Smiseck. Mead is another company with headquarters close to home, in Dayton.
“Ohio is chock-full of awesome,” says Smiseck.
Smiseck emphasizes that every company has potential. “You can’t think about a company for what they do,” says Smiseck. “Every major company and every minor company hires people to do everything.”
Konecranes is a manufacturing company in Springfield, owned by an alum. “Again, they need accountants, operations managers, marketers, logistic analysts.”
And if you don’t want to stay in Ohio, you can always make connections with other branches.
Fastenal, a Springfield company that recruits on campus, is a “local opportunity with connections to all over the U.S.”
Many of the jobs that are listed on salary.com’s compilation are jobs that are in demand and always will be. Smiseck described them as the “pieces that drive all other machines.”
Jobs like graphic designer and registered nurse are two examples of jobs that will always be needed. Smiseck says, “Lots of controversy surrounds the health care industry, but people always need to be cared for.”
“What Witt has to offer is awesome,” says Smiseck. The job and internship board is available as a resource for students to search for specific entry level jobs and internships all across the nation.
The most important aspect of job searching? “Do something that has meaning to you,” says Smiseck. “Know what you want to do, but don’t limit yourself to certain companies. Think outside of the box.”
