The Wittenberg softball team opened up there week of play with a split double header against the Kenyon lady-lords. The contest was held by Wittenberg on Wednesday the ninth.
Spirits were low after a tough single point loss to the visiting team in the first game of the day in which Wittenberg only managed to get ahold of four hits. However the Tigers were able to rally and pull off a big 10-2 retort, effectively shutting up any of those in the stands who may have doubted the Tiger’s prowess.
On the mound for the Tigers was freshman Alyssa Durette who was paramount in keeping the Kenyon batters at bay. Senior Kaitie Harrison and freshman Abby Baker lead the team offensively together batting in a majority of the team’s runs. Senior, Laura Rose smashed her 11th career home run raising her previously held school record.
Just three days after their split with Kenyon, Dillahunt Field was the staging ground for a Wittenberg University’s senior Day. The Tigers swept both games in a profound manner.
Rachel Ross brought the heat all day as pitcher, minimizing the Gator batters that made it to base in both of the relatively low-scoring games. The scoring for the Tigers was led by sophemores Loren Combs and Shannon Lance who each managed to cross home plate twice. Additionally, Combs stole her 24th season base. Senior Laura Rose managed to bat in two runners on the day.
The following day, Sunday the 13th, the tigers traveled to Delaware to take on the OWU Battling Bishops in a double header that had been twice previously postponed. Perhaps tuckered out from the long week of ball games, the Tigers were not able to keep the momentum going. Wittenberg lost both games with scores of 9-1 and 2-1 respectively.
Rachel Ross and Alyssa Durette pitched in the first game and the second game saw sophomore Kaela Hughes take the mound. Scoring for the Tigers were Laura Rose and Shelby Knapp. Rose was hit in by junior Ashlee Wright and Knapp scored off a hit by Rose.
