Last Wednesday, the softball team had their home opener with a double-header against the Capital Crusaders. The Tigers split the match-up, taking the first game handily 6-2 before dropping the second game 7-3.
In the first game, both sophomore Casey Hobbs and freshman Charlee Clark hit their second home runs of the season. Hobbs’ homer was a two-run hit in the bottom of the first. Shortly after, freshman Chelsea Zang had an RBI, giving the Tigers an early 3-0 lead.
They advanced that lead to 5-0 by the bottom of the second inning with an RBI from junior Kaela Hughes, and another from Hobbs. Hughes and Hobbs both had two hits in their three at-bats, leading the team in the category.
Clark’s homer in the bottom of the fifth rounded out Wittenberg’s scoring for the game. Capital put two runs on the board in the top of the seventh to avoid a shut-out.
Zang only allowed three hits in the game, while Capital gave up seven. Zang also had one strike-out. The Tigers had seven hits from 25 at-bats.
The second game went the way of the Crusaders. Capital started off strong, with three runs in the top of the first inning. By the bottom of the fourth inning, the score was 5-3, with the Crusaders leading. Junior Shannon Lance’s RBI started the Tigers’ scoring in the fourth. Sophomore Tori Simek then doubled, sending in two runners. The Tigers had four hits from 24 at-bats, compared to Capital’s 12 hits from 33 at-bats. Hobbs led the Tigers with two hits, Lance and Simek each posting one.
Zang gave up three hits while also having three strike-outs. Junior Lacey Eigel and freshman Abby Haab also pitched. Like Zang, Eigel gave up three hits, while Haab gave up six. Haab also had four strike-outs.
This brings the team’s overall record to 7-7. The Tigers started conference play on Mar. 31, when they traveled up to Wooster.
