Last Wednesday, the baseball team suffered from two home losses at Carleton Davidson Stadium. The first decision went the way of the DePauw Tigers, with a score of 5-2. The second margin was much more narrow, with DePauw only coming out on top just 3-2.
DePauw started the scoring on the day, getting their five runs in early. At the bottom of the fifth, Wittenberg scored two off runs batted in from sophomore Dalton Boucher and freshman Timmy Bates. Wittenberg accumulated six hits off of 26 at-bats, led by senior Zac Wilson, who contributed two of his own off five at-bats.
Freshman Kal Patterson and sophomores Trent Champlin and Cal Slusarz all saw time on the mound, facing a total of 35 batters. Slusarz posted the only strikeout for the Tigers of the first game.
The second game was a closer match-up that found its way to 10 innings. At the end of the regular nine innings, the score was tied 2-2, but in the top of the tenth, DePauw found their way to three runs, and Wittenberg was unable to answer. Three Tigers tried to lead the offense; Boucher, freshman Eli Goolsby-Broschart and junior Corey Farnbauch each posted two hits off four at-bats. As a team, the Tigers had 10 hits off 37 at-bats, compared to DePauw’s four hits off 34 at-bats.
Three more Wittenberg pitchers played this game, led by senior Stu Haley. Haley faced 25 batters and gave up just one hit, while adding in four strikeouts. Juniors Luke Black and Jordan Hitt followed Haley on the mound, with Black allowing one hit and Hitt giving up two.
These two losses drop the Tigers to a 5-16 overall record and 2-10 North Coast Athletic Conference record. The Tigers will play at home on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26, against Ohio Wesleyan University. April 25 will be a game that celebrates the alumni for the Tigers, and Sunday will be Senior Recognition Day.
