The Wittenberg men’s lacrosse team’s season came to an end on Wednesday evening, as the Tigers lost 19-5 to Denison in the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament.
This brought the Tigers to an overall record of 9-6 in the season. As the final score displays, the Tigers were unable to get any offense going against the Big Red of Denison. Wittenberg was only able to score about one goal a quarter.
Denison jumped out early, scoring on a man-up situation against the Tigers only three minutes into the game. The Big Red were able to fend off the Tigers’ attack until the final three minutes of the first quarter. It was sophomore Joseph Crawford, capitalizing off the pass from junior Andrew Fuss on the Denison man-up penalty. Wittenberg wouldn’t score again until the third quarter, when sophomore Zach Shy would recharge the Tiger offense, receiving assistance from junior TJ Smith.
Wittenberg made a good attempt at a comeback in the fourth quarter, but the Denison lead seemed to be too far. The Tigers then scored three back-to-back-to-back goals, an event started by senior Matt Hugdahl, and assisted Zach Shy for his second goal of the day. It wasn’t soon after that junior Will Stocker followed suit for the Tigers’ fourth goal on the day. The day finished with one more Tiger goal by junior Sean Kelleher, before the Big Red would finally push it too far out of hand.
Senior Riley Boehm led the midfield effort, winning 11 face-offs and picking up seven ground balls. Crawford also contributed in the midfield work with three pickups, while goalies senior Jay Dolan and sophomore Nick Gregory also saw time. Dolan made two saves and Gregory made five.
