Senior Wittenberg students and roommates Zackary Jenkins and Zachary Culvahouse are partners in crime on and off the field.
On Saturday when the announcer’s voice bellowed across Edwards-Maurer Field, it carried a familiar sound to the capacity parents weekend crowd.
zackjenkins“Zach Jenkins’ pass complete to Zach Culvahouse” has become a familiar refrain in stadiums across the NCAC in the past year, as the duo has connected 81 times during the 2014 campaign, which set a school record.
Furthermore, 14 of those grabs came against Butler, which was good for the school’s single game record.
The chemistry between the two extends off the field.
Even though these two are great friends and they play college football together, they don’t have to separate being friend and teammates.
“It’s really the opposite. I think us knowing each other and our styles of play so well has really lead to our success,” said Jenkins.
Culvahouse echoed his quarterback’s sentiments, saying, “We don’t have many differences. We’re both there for a common reason, which is to help our team get the win.”
“Zack and I were roommates my freshman and sophomore year and we’ve never had a problem separating our friendship from the game,” he continued.
“It’s actually helped us develop a stronger connection on the field and made us even better friends off the field ”
On the field, the team is having a good year.
“We have a lot of work to do but we are taking it a day at a time,” Jenkins said.
Of Culvahouse, he said, “He’s a heck of a target to have.”
This year the Zachs have been at it again, connected 22 times in two games on the young season. That includes two touchdown connections as the Tigers have moved to 2-0 on the season, with victories over Capital and Ohio Wesleyan. The 22 grabs have moved Culvahouse into Wittenberg’s top ten for receptions in a career.
Culvahouse and Jenkins, along with their Tiger teammates, will take the field against Wabash next Saturday as they visit the Little Giants before returning to Edwards-Maurer field on October 3 for a Homecoming matchup against the rival Wooster Fighting Scots at 1 p.m.
