In the fall of 2013, a graduate from small town Mason, Ohio, would join the Wittenberg family, and leave a mark at Wittenberg like no one quite expected.
Senior golfer Macy Hubbard is an accounting and business management double major. She knew she belonged at Witt the first time she ever set foot on campus.
The small class sizes and the closeness to home were all important to her, but the thing that stuck out the most was Wittenberg’s golf team.
Hubbard has had a club in her hand from the age of six, thanks to her grandfather, who has been a competitive golfer for years. “He really taught me the passion for the game, not to mention he has been coaching football for nearly 60 years. The passion for sports runs in the family,” Hubbard said.
Her family is quite supportive when it comes to her golfing career. She even said her aunt and uncle flew from Huston to watch her compete in the National Championship last year. That’s quite the fan base!
Time management has always been an obstacle, however. Between classes, homework, extra-curricular activities and of course, practice, practice, practice, Hubbard has to have her schedule down to a T. Keeping a confident and positive attitude is also a huge factor in Hubbard’s life. Before a match, she makes sure to go through her pre-game rituals, which helps her to focus and calm her nerves.
“[I] listen to music before getting out of the van, stretch, be sure to not only warm up on the range but also the chipping and putting green, mark my golf ball, if my family is there say hello to them, fist pump the team and head to the first hole,” Hubbard said. “You can’t always ensure you’ll have a successful tournament but you can be as prepared as possible and go into the few days of competition with a positive mindset.”
Those words alone are something everyone should live by in order to reach success. It isn’t every day you find something that you’re so passionate about, so when you do, it’s important that you take it seriously and work hard to keep it.
“Golf is important to me because it has shaped who I am today. Golf is arguably one of the most influential sports in relation to character, integrity, grit, work ethic, mental stability and much more. Perseverance is one of the most notable traits I have learned over the years. Hard work and dedication don’t pay off right away. It’ll take time and sometimes waiting to see results is agonizing. Not to mention golf, for me, is an outlet, an escape. There aren’t too many games you can play by yourself or with friends for four or more hours. Golf is a game for life,” Hubbard said.
In Hubbard’s career here at Witt, she has received a substantial number of awards. In 2014, 2015, and 2016, she was awarded NCAC First Team and All-American Scholar (Women’s Golf Coaches Association).
On top of that, in 2015, she won NCAA Third Place Team Participant.
In 2016, she received NCAA Individual Runner Up, an All-American Honorable Mention, All-Great Lakes Honors and was a member of the 2016 Chi Sigma Alpha Inductee class.
Hubbard has had the opportunity to intern with the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour, which has opened up many employment options for her to continue with her career in golfing.
