Junior Martin Mora has been dominating opponents for the Wittenberg Tigers Tennis Team ever since he stepped foot on campus as a freshmen in 2014. Having played tennis for as long as he’s been able to hold a racquet, all of the hours he has spent training has paid off in a big way for the Ecuadorian student.
Mora grew up in Quito, Ecuador and began playing tennis at the age of eight. Slowly, Mora’s abilities began to grow and develop. He was only in high school when he became known as the second ranked tennis player in the nation of Ecuador for his age group. Being nationally know at such a young age can put a lot of pressure on a high school senior looking for a college to call home.
“I came to Wittenberg because I knew I wanted to play tennis at a very competitive level,” Mora said. “I wanted to go to a place where I could be an athlete, have a social life, make life long friends and most importantly, to get a great education.”
Since arriving at Wittenberg, Mora has been a force to be reckoned with on the tennis court and for NCAC opponents.
As a freshman, Mora competed in, and won, nine singles matches and 11 doubles matches, earning him a varsity letter as well as second-team NCAC honors. As a sophomore, Mora had only one loss on his record, earning him a varsity letter and NCAC honors. Although his junior season is not over until late April, Mora has big plans for what he wants to accomplish.
“I want to finish the season unbeaten and win the NCAC tournament,” Mora said. “Tennis is something that I’m very passionate about and I want to continue my winning record.”
Balancing athletics and academics can be a difficult task for any student athlete, however, Mora admits that he doesn’t face this problem too often. He realizes how important tennis is to him and that’s why he strives to be excellent in every aspect of his life, so that he can continue to play the sport that he loves. Mora believes that the thing that keeps him going is life is tennis. It has taught him mental toughness as well as giving him the opportunity to do the things that are hard to find, like travelling the world to play the sport that he loves.
“Tennis is important to me because it has helped me mature as a person,” Mora said. “It has shown me how to deal with situations and challenges when I don’t have anyone to lean on.”
Mora is an all-around great athlete and student. He has earned his spot on the tennis team and hopes to continue to do great things for the program. Come out on Feb. 18, to watch Mora and the rest of Wittenberg’s Tennis Team take on Capital University at 5 p.m. at the Albright Tennis Complex on campus.
