Victoria Zysik has returned from the Wittenberg Women’s Lacrosse Team spring break trip and is ready to take on the spring season as a junior captain.

After wins against John Carroll and Albion, the team traveled to Austin where the team beat Piedmont College and Southwestern University in the heat, but fell to Lynchburg.

For many members of the team, it was their first time visiting the state where everything is bigger. Zysik described the good times of staying in a house together instead of the usual hotel where they cooked together and hung out by the pool. One afternoon ,the team got to explore downtown Austin where they went in local shops and ate Tex-Mex.

“I love playing lacrosse here because the team is so close,” Zysik said. “They are my best friends and we support each other on and off the field.”

Coming off a previous spring season in which women’s lacrosse appeared in the NCAC semi-finals against Denison, Zysik is looking forward to conference games with hopes of winning the 2017 NCAC tournament.

“Denison is our biggest rivalry game and we always see them in the tournament. We all really want to beat them,” Zysik said. “Our games against Denison are always really close.”

Zysik also received Second Team NCAC honors last season. She projects it being a good season for the team this year with some “fast and skilled” freshmen on board. One of these freshmen is her younger sister, Gabby Zysik.

“Gabby and I have always been really close. She is like my best friend, so getting to share the experience of WWL with her is really special to me,” Zysik said.

The two sisters, who both play either attack or midfield, know what teamwork means as they played lacrosse together at Perrysburg High School.

Lacrosse was not popular in the area she grew up, and only started playing as a freshman in high school when her mom encouraged her to try it. It quickly became her favorite sport and she couldn’t imagine walking away from it once high school ended. So, she took her stick and cleats with her to Wittenberg.

“I love that Witt is a close-knit community built on traditions,” Zysik said. “I also love that everyone you interact with here is friendly.”

As a biochemistry/molecular biology major with a studio art minor, Zysik plans on taking the MCAT this spring and applying to medical school this summer in the hopes of becoming a doctor after graduation. After interning at a Toledo hospital last summer, her eyes were opened to the world of surgery as a potential career path.
