The second season for the Wittenberg Men’s Volleyball Team drew to a close with their final home games against North Central on April 8.
The young team had their ups and downs throughout the season, from losing eight matches in a row to losing head coach Even Amstutz. Women’s volleyball head coach Paco Labrador stepped in to fill the interim position.
The Tigers finished out their season with 14 wins and 18 losses. Under Amstutz, the team had a .333 winning percentage, but during Labrador’s time at the helm, the team had a .500 winning percentage.
Libero Troy Boucher, ’19, said he felt almost an immediate change in the team.
“When Paco came in the first weekend, we lost all four matches, but all of them were super close, and I could already feel a shift,” Boucher said.
Under Labrador, the Tigers secured big wins against Benedictine and Mount St. Joseph. Against Benedictine, the team lost the first two sets, but managed to rally together and win the next three. When the team beat Mount St. Joseph, the Lions were ranked in the top five in the country.
“We really came together as a team and learned that we have the ability to beat any team we play when we have the right mindset,” Isaiah Brock, middle hitter and ’19, said.
Brock looks forward to next season when the majority of players on the team will be upperclassmen.
“When the incoming freshmen get here, they will have so many teammates to look up to and learn from,” Brock said. “I also hope that having this many upperclassmen will motivate the younger guys to push themselves on the court. If they’re pushing themselves to get better than us, we all benefit from it.”
As things continue to fall together for the Tigers, they’ll certainly be a team opponents will want to look out for.
