Wittenberg Women’s Basketball Team played their first two home games at Pam Evans Smith Arena for the 2017-2018 season over the past week, bouncing back from a Friday night loss with a Saturday night win.

On Dec. 1, the Tigers played against the Allegheny Gators, losing by a score of 77-72. The Tigers put up a good fight against the Gators. Wittenberg had the lead during the first quarter, 19-11, before Allegheny came and took over the lead, 39-34, at halftime.

In the third quarter, Wittenberg came back to take the lead with six minutes left. After the Tigers regained the lead, the momentum was going back and forth between the Tigers and Gators, as the score tied at 55 a piece to start the fourth quarter. Allegheny controlled the majority of the game in the fourth quarter by going up by seven points with less than five minutes left in the game. The Tigers surged back into the game, cutting the lead down to one, 73-72, with two minutes left. The Gators were about to score three more time points to seal the win. The Tigers scoring was led by junior Alex Kiess with 20 points.

On Dec. 2, the Tigers hosted the Hiram College Terriers. The Tigers defeated the Terriers 78-66. Wittenberg came together and collectively beat Hiram with multiple players scoring with ease. Sydney Mayle, ‘19, Delaney Williams, ‘21, Amanda Raber, ‘19 and Hannah Weaver ,’19, finished the game with more than ten points. Mayle lead all scorers from both teams with 19 points, also adding on three rebounds, one assist and a steal.

The Tigers offense was heated by leading the three-point game while Hiram went 1-17 behind the arc. Wittenberg held a lead the majority of the game. Hiram’s only lead was in the first few minutes of the game.

At halftime, the score was 41-35 and a majority of Wittenberg’s points came from Mayle and Williams. Williams finished the game with 15 points, seven rebounds and assists, and two steals. Raber was 4-4 at the free throw line. Weaver played great coming off the bench as she finished the game with 10 points and dished out 2 assists, collecting 2 rebounds. Abigail Crum, ‘19, led the Tigers with eight rebounds and five points.

The Tigers’ next home game will be on Dec. 6 against DePauw at 7:30 p.m.
