Noah Moderwell, ’20, has had a unforgettable presence on and off the lacrosse field ever since he first stepped foot on Wittenberg’s campus as a freshman in 2016.
Moderwell grew up in Libertyville, Il., and began playing lacrosse in the sixth grade. Most of his life has revolved around sports, whether it was to pass the time by playing a game of catch with his family or by competing in various sports for his high school and club teams. Despite his burning love for the game, he admits that he doesn’t let it consume his entire life.
Moderwell chose to make Wittenberg his home for many reasons, but the main reason is because of the values behind a liberal arts educations. Growing up, his parents had always pushed the importance of being a well rounded individual and Witt had provided him with the best opportunity to do that.
“Before I began looking at colleges, my parents always told me that a small liberal arts atmosphere is the right place for me to learn and grow and they were right,” Moderwell said. “I knew I wanted to focus on being a regular college student and not having to worry about sports all of the time, but the balance is perfect here. I get to enjoy playing the sport I love, while still having time to follow my other passions.”
Since arriving at Wittenberg, Moderwell has been a force to be reckoned with. As a freshmen, he appeared in all 16 games, starting in 15 of them. He recorded 53 points on 36 goals and 17 assists, also picking up 30 groundballs. After playing in his first collegiate game for the Tigers, Moderwell was named the North Coast Athletic Conference player of the week for scoring three goals, picking up eight groundballs and causing one turnover. This season, he has started as an attacker and midfielder in all eight games for the Tigers. He has 32 points on 23 goals and nine assists.
Balancing athletics and academics can be very difficult for many student athletes, however, Moderwell admits that he doesn’t face this problem very often. He understands what his priorities are and that helps him keep on track. For now, his sights are set on leading the program to the next level.
“We have a really young team now, but all of our guys are dedicated and want to work towards building a brighter and better future for the team,” Moderwell said. “I think before I graduate we’ll be able to beat Ohio Wesleyan, win the NCAC championship and earn a spot in the NCAA tournament.”
He has earned his spot on the team and looks to keep lacrosse in his life for ever. After graduating, he plans to get a job working as a public accountant and wants to continue his lacrosse career by competing in adult leagues and hopefully coaching.
Until then, Moderwell and the rest of the Men’s Lacrosse team will continue regular season action on March 31 at 1 p.m. at Edwards-Maurer Field as they take on their NCAC opponent the Big Red of Denison University.
