On Wednesday night, the Women’s Lacrosse team took on Denison University’s Big Red at Edwards-Maurer Field. The Tigers were coming in off of their Senior and Lace Up with Lax Day win against the Hiram College Terriers the past Saturday, with 16-5 being the final score. Though, Wednesday did not end so well for the Tigers; the final score was 6-23. On Saturday, April 14, the Tigers took on the Ladies of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio where the Tigers lost 8-18.
“We played hard for the entire 60 minutes,” Coach Margaret Wolford said in reference to the score of the Denison game. “We had several players dealing with sickness and injuries and were still able to piece together some great plays. The score did not reflect the team’s effort and overall play.”
The game started off a little shaky after Denison scored eight seconds into the half and again 45 seconds later. After Denison’s third goal, off of a free position shot, it did not take the Tigers long to score. Emily Wadds, ’19, drew control of the ball, and passed it off to Rachel Bernard, ’20, who scored for the Tigers, finally putting them on the board. After that, it was a battle for shots. The Big Red scored again but were followed up by a goal from Faith Meads, ’20, that was assisted by Victoria Zysik, ’18.
With the Tigers down by two, the game began to heat up. To no avail, Denison kept racking up points. Bernard was not going to let the continuation of the score stop her from scoring an unassisted goal, putting the Tigers up a notch.
At the half, Denison had 14 points and the Tigers had three, putting them behind 11 at halftime.
The Big Red were on fire coming out of the break, but the Tigers kept pushing on. 12 minutes into the half, Zysik scored again putting the Tigers on the board for the second half. Wadds scored again and her goal was followed up by a goal from Meads, and that was the last time the Tigers scored in the game. Finishing strong with 2:40 left to play, the Tigers held off Big Red the best they could.
“Our game against Denison was not the outcome we had hoped for, but it was a good learning game for us,” Sami Skelly, ‘20, said. “We adjusted to things they threw at us while also making some mistakes. After leaving the field that night, our team learned a lot of important things to make us better for Kenyon on Saturday.”
The Kenyon game saw the Ladies of Kenyon ahead early on in the first half, leading 12-2 at the break. The Tigers came back out pushing and fighting back, scoring six times before the conclusion of the game. Wadds scored the final goal for the Tigers, and Zysik walked away with four of Witt’s eight goals on the day.
The Tigers have three games remaining this season; Tuesday, April 17, at home against DePauw, Saturday, April 21 at Allegheny and Wednesday, April 25 at home against Ohio Wesleyan which will be their Code Red game.
