Imagine sitting in your middle school health class learning about puberty and talking about the human reproductive system.
There are so many topics people can choose from in the world of entertainment. Unfortunately, many of the topics one can talk about are very limited. Netflix brings one of the most controversial topics to their streaming service. What is the name of the show that centers around one of these topics?
The name of the show is “Sex Education.” Directed by Joe Jennings,
the show centers around a boy named Otis, who is played by English actor Asa Butterfield. Butterfield is known from films such as “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” and “The Space Between Us.” Otis is in his mid-teens as he juggles being the son of a divorced sex therapist mother Jean played by Gillian Anderson, from “The X-Files,” with just being a normal kid.
The show touches on topics such as sexuality, insecurities and relationship problems. Eric ,who is played by Ncuti Gatwa, is one of the openly gay males on the show.
Gatwa does a pretty good job of playing the role as it takes guts to portray someone in the LGBTQ+ community, even though this country is equally divided. Another example of sexuality is when Adam Groff, portrayed by Connor Swindells, is a closeted homosexual, but doesn’t want to admit it. In one episode, he sleeps with a guy and threatens him not to tell anyone about what happened.
The other topic the show touches on are insecurities. In one episode a couple was attempting to have sex with the lights off because one of them didn’t like what the other looked like. Often times, one has a problem with what they look like. Another example would be in episode five when Maeve, played by Emma Mackey, a smart girl with a broken home, comes clean about her insecurities about being called an inappropriate nickname. She struggles with the label she is given from a rumor.
Another girl, Ruby, also has insecurities going on in her life as there is an explicit photo of her going around.
The last topic the show touches on is problems within relationships. For example, the headmaster has a broken relationship with his son, which is why he lashes out all the time.
In each episode of the show, there is always a problem in a relationship that has been addressed. In one episode, there is a lesbian couple where one girl wants to have sex, but the other one is not ready.
So, if you are looking for an interesting show, then “Sex Education” is the show for you.
