This past week, the women’s soccer team hosted Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday, Sept. 4 for their home opener. Playing against the Yellow Jackets, the Tigers lost 1-0 in double overtime. Then the Tigers hosted Centre College on Saturday, Sept. 7 and took another loss at 2-1.
“We knew heading into this week that we would have to battle some fatigue,” head coach Katie Robinson said. “Playing 4 games in 8 days isn’t easy but overall, we feel that the team handled it well. The double overtime loss to Baldwin Wallace was a tough one but we felt like we played well and can learn and grow from that game.”
Prior to taking on Baldwin Wallace, the Tigers travelled to the University Mount Union and took a 2-0 win. The team then took on Spalding University and won 3-0.
The Tigers and the Yellow Jackets were evenly matched throughout the game, each team taking their shots at the goal. It took 105 minutes for the first and only goal to be scored by the Yellow Jackets.
The Tigers had taken 12 shots in total with eight shots on goal. There were 11 corner kicks for the Tigers and seven fouls. Between both goalies, Emma Schewe (’22) and Kelly Corbin (’20) there were four saves– one for Schewe and three for Corbin.
“Heading into Saturday against number 12 in the country, Centre, we talked a lot about competing and battling through what we knew would be a tough game,” Robinson said. “While we didn’t get the result we hoped for we were very pleased with our team energy and effort defensively and felt that creating good chances in front of goal against a Nationally ranked team this early in the season is a fantastic thing to build on.”
On Saturday afternoon, the Colonels came out of the gate ready to play. Corbin was in the goal for the Tigers and had two saves within the first nine minutes of play. The Tigers had two shots taken before Brooke Peters (’23) made the first goal of the game after 22 minutes of play. The Tigers kept the Colonels at bay for almost 42 minutes before they scored with three minutes left in the second half.
In the second half, both Kaitlyn Krieg (’21) and Jasmine Evans (’21) took shots at the Colonel goal, but neither made it past the keeper. The Colonels scored for the second time, 64 minutes into the game, after a corner kick that snuck past Schewe and put them ahead of the Tigers.
With the Colonels ahead, the Tigers weren’t ready to give up. Emily Wile (’22) and Emma Thacker (’20) both managed to get the ball past the Colonels, but weren’t fast enough to send the ball between the pipes. Wile had one shot that the keeper stopped and sent another sailing over the goal. Thacker had a shot that went just a tad over the crossbar.
Corbin made five saves in her 45 minutes between the pipes. Schewe had three saves in the second half. Throughout the game the Tigers had eight shots, with five corner kicks and only one foul.
Looking ahead, the Tigers will be hitting the road to Hanover College on Saturday Sept. 14 before returning home to go against Capital University on Sunday, Sept. 15. Senior Day will be the following Saturday, Sept. 21 against Wilmington College.
