The Wittenberg football team started NCAC conference play on the road this past weekend against the Hiram College Terriers. The Tigers defeated the Terriers, 36-12 and are currently 1-1 overall, and 1-0 in NCAC play for the season. The Tigers faced the Hiram Terriers after being ranked twenty-fifth by D3Football.com following last week’s 16-8 loss to Washington & Jefferson.
The Tigers struck the first blow against the Terriers, scoring late in the first quarter on a one-yard rush by Bobby Froehlich (’21), Christian Seger (’23) then completed the extra point. The Tigers got the ball back minutes into the second quarter and Nick Bowman (’23) missed a field goal attempt from the 38-yard line. The Tigers spent the second quarter trading the football with Hiram, as the score remained 7-0 at the half.
Wittenberg finally scored off a two-yard rush by Froehlich with 9:16 left in the third quarter bringing the score to 14-0 followed by an extra point kick by Seger. The Tigers struck again minutes later as Froehlich completed a three-yard pass to Tim Woodrum (’20) with 6:26 left in the third. Following the kick, the Tigers led Hiram, 21-0.
The Terriers struck minutes later with a 30-yard pass for a touchdown, but Hiram’s extra point attempt was denied as Danny Foster (’20) blocked the kick and Thomas Scholl (’20) returned the ball for a defensive PAT. Scholl’s return brought the score to 23-6 with 4:33 left in the third quarter.
The Tigers first drive of the fourth quarter ended with an interception at the Tiger’s own 11-yard line which Hiram returned for a touchdown. The Terriers extra point attempt failed, bringing the score to 23-12 with 13:13 left in the fourth quarter. The Tigers stuck again on a 30-yard rush by Jaheem Washington (’20). Seger missed the extra point attempt, bringing the score to 29-12 with 9:13 left in the fourth quarter. Wittenberg’s final nail in coffin for the Terriers occurred late in fourth quarter as Washington rushed 37-yards for a touchdown. Bowman completed the extra point bringing the score to 36-12 with 2:23 left to play.
The Tigers offense was led by quarterback Froelich who threw 218 yards over 43 pass attempts. Washington led the Tigers with 99 rushing yards, while Troy Clay (’20) rushed for 34-yards. Erik Anderson (’20) led the Tigers with 65 receiving yards, while Sam Kayser (’21) was a close second with 63 receiving yards. The Tigers were inefficient on converting third downs as only five of 17 Wittenberg third downs ended with a touchdown or the chains being moved.
The Tigers defense was led by Jonathan Seay (’20) with eight tackles and one sack. Logan Jewsikow (’22) was the Tigers leading solo tackler with five out of his six being solo, along with having two sacks for nine-yards.
The Tigers have their home opener Saturday against Wooster at 4:30 p.m. at Edward-Maurer Field. The College of Wooster comes to Springfield undefeated thus far, beating Bluffton, 31-6 and Oberlin, 17-0. The Tigers ended their 2018 season with a 27-21 win on the road against Wooster last November.
