This past week both the men’s soccer team and women’s soccer game tackled a game at home and on the road. The men’s team took a win over Earlham College 5-0 at home on Sept. 25, but fell to Hiram College 2-1 on the road on Sept. 28. The women’s team lost to Ohio Northern University at home on Sept. 25, 2-1, but conquered Hiram College 3-0 on Sept. 28. Let’s take a look back at each team’s performance this past week:
Men’s Soccer
Taking on the Quakers of Earlham on Wednesday, River Banks (’21) scored at 31:09 in the first half with an assist from Eli Esterline (’22). Coming out into the second half, the Quakers’ keeper had stumbled over the ball and passed it into his own goal putting the Tigers ahead 2-0.
With a newfound fire, freshman standout Sean Williams (’23) pressed the Quakers and managed to score an unassisted goal at 55:11. Williams found another scoring opportunity at 58:04 with the assist of a good look from Esterline. These two goals were Williams sixth and seventh for the season. At 59:50, Aaron Craddock (’23) scored the final goal of the game with an assist from Williams.
Danny Kukanza (’23) lead in shots for the Tigers with three in the win, keeper Jason Bowen (’22) had two saves. The team took 16 shots, 11 of which were on goal, had seven fouls and took eight corner kicks.
Hitting the road on Saturday and taking on Hiram, the Tigers kept the Terriers at bay until the second half. Williams scored his eighth goal of the season at 57:41. The Terriers came up behind the Tigers and managed to sneak two goals past Bowen, who had 11 saves by the 90-minute marker.
The Tigers took 15 shots to the Terriers 21 in the losing effort. Williams, Esterline and Jacob Snowden (’21) lead in shots with three a piece. The Tigers drew 10 fouls and took three corner kicks.
Looking ahead, the men’s soccer team will be hitting the road and taking on the Lords of Kenyon College on Oct. 5 before returning home in their Code Red match-up against the Yeomen of Oberlin College.
Women’s Soccer
Going up against the Polar Bears from Ohio Northern University, on Wednesday the Tigers fell short the first half. The Polar Bears took the lead at 38:52, sending the ball past keeper Kelly Corbin (’20). Heading into the second half, Kaitlyn Krieg (’21) tied the game up at 61:59 without an assist. But, the Tigers weren’t able to hold onto the tie for long. The Polar Bears scored again at 74:13, capturing their lead.
The Tigers had four shots, three of which were on goal, to the Polar Bears’ 14 shots with 13 fouls and two corner kicks. Corbin had four saves between the pipes.
Taking on the Terriers from Hiram, the Tigers captured an early lead when Jasmine Evans (’21) scored at 6:55 with an assist from Krieg. Managing to keep the Terriers at bay for the remainder of the half, the Tigers held their 1-0 lead.
At 65:30, Alix Steele (’22) had a Tiger goal with an assist from Carly Stang (’21). The final goal of the game came at 68:38 when Brooke Peters (’23) took advantage of an opening after an assist from Stang.
The Tigers managed 20 shots, with 11 on goal, drew nine fouls and took nine corner kicks. Corbin made three saves, Evans lead in shots with four and Stang lead in assists with two.
Looking ahead, the Tigers are hitting the road on Oct. 5 to take on the Ladies of Kenyon College.
