On the morning of Sept. 11, 2021, a small group gathered with Pastor Andy Tune at the Wittenberg University Seal located just south of Myers Hall. Paster Andy spoke briefly about the event, encouraging those present to consider positive lessons that could be taken from that day.

Pastor Andy reminded the group attending the commemoration of President Lincoln’s words who encouraged us to remember, “that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Pastor Andy then led the group in prayer to mourn the loss of those who died 20 years ago that day.

Pastor Andy then opened the floor for those who wanted to speak on their experience of that day. History professor Dr. Molly Wood, who is currently teaching a class on Sept. 11, joined the conversation. Wood talked about a heartfelt message that she recently received from a former student who recalled the impact that that day in 2001 left on them.

After a moment of silence, Myers Bell rang out at the moment that the first plane had struck the first tower.

Following its ringing, Wood said that it was, “…[strange] hearing the bell because we hear it on happy occasions.” Pastor Andy led the group in one more prayer before attendees dispersed. Lastly, just down the hill, the flag in front of Recitation was lowered to half-mast to honor those lost on 9/11.
