Wittenberg lacrosse remained undefeated against Transylvania on Saturday. The Tigers opened up the game firing shots early.  The Tigers were up 3-0 with 12 minutes still left in the first period.  The goals were scored from the sticks of Sean Kelleher, Jordan Shoger and Andrew Fuss.  Transylvania was in the game until the third period started with the Fuss twins connecting twice in a row.  Andrew and Thomas Fuss connected on back to back goals. Thomas ended the game with 3 goals and two assist.  His brother Andrew ended with 2 goals and three assists.  The Tigers were led by Sean Kelleher who finished the game with a career high four goals.  Jay Dolan turned in a rock solid game in the net.  Dolan had 12 saves out of the Transylvania’s 29 shots.  He only let in 4 goals the whole game. Wittenberg launched 39 shots in the game. The Tigers kept rolling all game winning by a final score of 13-4.
Wittenberg has been led to the 2-0 start by new Head Coach Jay Owen. This is his first season as head coach.  Owen has been an assistant coach at Salisbury for 15 years, but this is his first head coaching job.  As an assistant, he won five Division III national titles and hopes to bring the same success to Wittenberg.
Wittenberg was chosen to finish fifth in the NCAC, but that has not stopped them so far this year.  With no losses on the season, Wittenberg lacrosse is ranked number one by Lacrosse Power.  Lacrosse Power generates their rankings through a numbers system and is known to not be that accurate until later on in the season.  This has not hurt the spirits of Wittenberg Lacrosse though.
Ryan Parmater summed up their number one ranking perfectly by saying, “if we don’t lose, then we will stay number one I would believe.  So we are going to try to not lose.”
Either way, the team is determined to finish better than their fifth place ranking in the NCAC last season. The NCAC is year in and year out one of the top lacrosse division three conferences in the mid-west.  The NCAC has lacrosse powerhouses in Dennison and Ohio Wesleyan.  They both are in the NCAA tournament almost every year.
The Tigers will take on Aurora in Michigan on Tuesday, March 4.  It was moved from Indianapolis.  The beginning of the lacrosse season has had all kinds of changes due to the weather.
