After an exciting weekend, the Wittenberg men’s basketball team defeated DePauw on Friday, but then suffered a loss to Wooster in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship Game.
The DePauw win was by far the Tigers’ biggest of the season, with the Division III national tournament coming up this week. After tying for second place in the regular season, the Tigers defeated Denison in the first round of the conference tournament
This set the stage for last weekend, as Wittenberg beat DePauw in a tight contest, 63-61, in their third match up of the season, and potentially solidifying a berth into the NCAA tournament after the much needed signature win.
The Tigers were aided by senior big man Scott Masin, who dominated in the second half, pouring in 15 points and ripping down 10 rebounds, including an impressive performance from the free throw line, shooting a much improved nine for 12 from the charity stripe.
A win Saturday against arch rival Wooster would have meant an automatic berth into the playoffs, but the Tigers came up just short, losing 71-63. This was Wittenberg’s third loss to Wooster this year, and the defeat pushed their record to (21-7) overall.
Leading the way for Wittenberg was sophomore swing man Alex Fultz, who had 13 points, along with Masin who chipped in 12.
The Tigers will find out Monday afternoon if they will be dancing into March or not.
