On Jan. 30, Wittenberg’s IT department tried to enhance its system by upgrading a server that ended up causing complications all across campus. Students all over could not access the network, so online work could not be completed. The problem lasted for a little less than two weeks, being resolved on Feb. 12. Students should not have any more problems should contact IT if there are any.

Students felt the effects a few days after the system upgrade, when they started having trouble logging into the system on Feb. 3, when said upgrade was causing a “Denial of Service” that would not let students get into the network. The system would not receive the addresses. Students would type in their username and password, and the monitor would display an error message and refuse the students access. Students could not even get to the desktop to print off papers from their flash drives.

Luckily for students, the IT department was able to fix this problem shortly thereafter.

However about a week following the first problem, the system started “serving duplicate addresses,” which can make two devices sharing addresses problematic. Unfortunately, for the time being, a definitive solution cannot be found, so the IT department reverted to finding temporary solution.

“We believe the problem has now been corrected by falling back to our original server,” Scott Powell, the director of IT Infrastructure and Support, said and looked to the future of the department and its advancements. “We will continue to move forward with our upgrade, but will be employing different implementation and testing strategies.”

For further information, or questions and concerns about technology, the IT department can be contacted at (937) 525-3801. A student can also email at solution@wittenberg.edu.
