            This past week the nominees for Wittenberg University’s highest award bestowed onto one male and one female in the current junior class were announced.  These awards, the Alma Lux for the male and Alma Mater for the female, are designed to be given to the some of the best of the junior class as voted on by the student population.
The nominees for the Alma Lux award are Paulo Bezerra, AJ Burt, Jake Ferrier, Joseph Germano, and Aeron Roach.  The nominees for the Alma Mater award are Elizabeth Doll, Paige Erb, Brittany Goehmann, Alyssa Hughes, and Audrey Owens.  All nominees were determined by a special committee which decided on each nominee.  The general student population will then vote for the winner of each category which will be announced at the Wittenberg Honors Convocation on April 11.
“The Alma Mater and Alma Lux are  the highest honors bestowed  on members of our junior class,” said Angie Fairbanks, executive assistant of student development. “Candidates are selected on the basis of character and integrity, service to the community, concern for others, and high levels of scholarship representing standards of excellence on our campus.
Alma Mater nominee Elizabeth Doll is involved in the school as Secretary – American International Association, Alpha Lambda Delta, Vice President-Public Relations – Kappa Delta, Gamma Sigma Alpha, Gay Straight Alliance, Hall Government, Ivy Ring, President – Kappa Delta Pi, Membership Chair – Omicron Delta Kappa, Assistant Public Relations – PanHellenic Council, Peer Mentor, Pick-N-Pen, Spanish Club, Photo Editor and Senior Writer – “The Torch,” Parliament of Wittenberg Environmental Revolution (PoWER), Fraternal Values Society, FLLC tutor for Spanish, and Wittenberg Singers
Paige Erb serves in Alpha Lambda Delta, Pre-Health Club, Kappa Delta, Gamma Sigma Alpha, Fraternal Values, Psi-Chi (Psychology Honorary Society), Research Assistant to Dr. Woehrle – Psychology, Mortar Board, Student Director for Springfield’s “Not in Our Town” branch, and volunteer at Oesterlen Services for the Youth.
Brittany Goehmann is involved in Alpha Lambda Delta, Colleges Against Cancer, Treasurer – Common Ground, Emerging Leaders, President – Gamma Phi Beta, Ivy Ring, Orientation Assistant, Peer Ministry Task Force, Pick-N-Pen, Resident Advisor, Student Organizations Senator – Student Senate, Intro Biology Lab Peer Mentor, Rho Gamma, Wittenberg in Lesotho Service Trip, and Habitat for Humanity Alternative Spring Break Trips.
Alyssa Hughes participates in Colleges Against Cancer,  2015 Class Cabinet, Vice President – Common Ground, Emerging Leaders, Build Site Coordinator – Habitat for Humanity, Lutheran Student Movement, Peer Ministry Task Force, Peer Helpers, Interfaith Senator – Student Senate, Weaver Chapel Association, Parliament of Wittenberg Environmental Revolution (PoWER), Public Relations Chair – Bloom Africa, Interfaith Committee, and Community Service Student Coordinator Wittenberg in Lesotho service trip and Habitat alternative spring break trips and President and co-founder – Wittenberg Promise Alliance Club.
Audrey Owens works with Alpha Lambda Delta, Vice President Class of 2015, Emerging Leaders, Alpha Delta Pi, Kappa Delta Pi, Orientation Assistant, Resident Advisor, Common Ground, Lutheran Student Movement, Education Club, Jewish Culture Club, Panhellenic Council, No Woman Left Behind, Women in Power, Tiger Fund, Build a Better Wittenberg, Wittenberg Tour Guide, and a student representative for the Math Workshop Advisory Committee.
As for the Alma Lux nominees, Paulo Berreza is involved with Emerging Leaders, Habitat for Humanity, Beta Theta Pi, Orientation Assistant,  and Union Board.
AJ Burt is apart of the Admission tour guide, Chi Alpha Sigma, President – Class of 2015, Emerging Leader, Alumni Relations – Delta Tau Delta, Shifters, Orientation Assistant, Phi Eta Sigma, Junior Senator – Student Senate, and Wittenberg Swim Team.
Jacob Ferrier is a member of Beta Theta Pi, Heart, Hall government, Orientation Assistant, Phi Eta Sigma, and Resident Advisor.
Joseph Germano serves as President – Phi Kappa Psi, Inferfraternity Council, Orientation Assistant, Peer Mentor for summer college, Student Assistant in the  Psychology Department,  and Wittenberg Football.
Aeron Roach is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Society of Physics Students, Residence Hall Association, RHA Senator – Student Senate, DJ and General Manager for WUSO Radio, and President of Beta Theta Pi.
The Honors convocation, where the awards will be presented, will conclude the Celebration of Liberal Arts in Action in Weaver Chapel.
