Back in the 1960s, “Mr. Peabody and Sherman” was a history education segment of the popular television show “Rocky and Bullwinkle.” But as of March 14, it has become a full 3D animated, stand-alone film. Featuring the voice of Ty Burrell (Modern Family) as Mr. Peabody, the movie tells the story of the world’s most intelligent being, who just so happens to be a little white dog sporting a tie and a pair of glasses. With his adopted son, Sherman, the two travel through time to learn about different periods in world history via Mr. Peabody’s invention, the WAYBAC. Yet, the film ends up being more than just wacky misadventures.
While the story itself seems rushed and awkward in places, there is a lot of heart and personality behind the characters. In the course of about 92 minutes, the film displays conflict, emotional and personal development, and growing relationships between all the characters. On top of that, there’s also a combination of smart, goofy humor that has the ability to entertain both adult and child audiences alike.
“Mr. Peabody and Sherman” might not be the “best” animated feature film to premier in theaters, but it still manages to find its own way to stick out among the crowd. If you’re looking for a fun, entertaining movie to occupy your time watching, or even if you just want to indulge in the nostalgia factor, “Mr. Peabody and Sherman” is definitely worth the ticket price.
