The results are in: the freshman class voted for its student government representatives last week, and Sean Doyle, a Wittenberg family legacy, was elected as president.
The Upper Arlington native is double majoring in political science and music, and is considering a minor in history.
At the beginning of his campaign, fellow students urged him to run for class president
“I had a lot of great people surrounding me who were very passionate about my campaign,” Doyle said. He later added: “Being able to lead my class, and being a part of the senate will show me – and it has shown me already – what real leadership is.”
Doyle is not new to the political scene. In middle school and high school, Doyle was an active member in student government. Entering the collegiate level, he is ready to partake in “the major things the senate does.” Though his duties have yet to be announced in full – for he was just sworn in earlier this week – he will likely be involved in financial matters and community outreach projects.
After Wittenberg, Doyle hopes to obtain a JD (Juris Doctorate) from a graduate school to go into law. Following a decade’s worth of practicing law, Doyle hopes to run in political campaigns.
“Anything where I can try to help as many people as I can,” Doyle said, “that would be great.”
Other than student government, Doyle’s extra-curricular activities include College Republicans, Wittmen Crew, and WittChoir.
“Music and theater,” Doyle said, “have always been, for me, a release. It’s a place where I can go and I can feel more comfortable and release tension, and be around a lot of great people.”
Doyle holds music and theater “close to his heart,” having been involved in performances for over 13 years, and is attending Wittenberg on a vocal music scholarship.
Doyle also sees his musical ties as ways to help him in public speaking/interpersonal communication, and to “stay grounded.” In this way, performing has helped him to relate to people.
Joining Doyle to represent the freshman class are Vice President Mecca Abdul-Aziz, Treasurer Ryan Roark, and Secretary Cylie Hodge. Doyle is excited to work with his fellow representatives, and is grateful for the opportunities he has been given.
“Thank you,” he said to his classmates. “I believe that this class will do things that no other class has done. We’re going to raise the bar, and we’re going to push every area of this university into greater things and greater times….Thank you for believing in me.”
