Well-known for its summer strawberry festival, Troy is a very cute town with an interesting history dating back centuries.
Troy is home to the Overfield Tavern Museum, although I didn’t stop by it this visit. Built in 1808, the tavern used to be the most popular place to be in town. The County Court even met there until 1811. Today, the tavern serves as a museum and showcases authentic antique furniture and artifacts from the time when the tavern was open. I love museums and I think it would be fun to step inside and see how life was in the small town back then.
Troy was also in one of the areas heavily affected by the Great Flood of 1913. Many towns in southwestern Ohio were damaged after area rivers overflowed and flooded towns.
Seeing downtown Troy today, one might not know its history. A roundabout sits in the center of the downtown with shops, restaurants and even some historical buildings flowing out from the center. Although it was very cold and windy the day I visited, during warmer weather, strolling around and taking in the sights can make for a fun afternoon.
On my trip, I stopped in The 3 Weird Sisters Studio, a local shop that sells vintage home décor and repurposed furniture. Some cute deals? A pair of bright blue wooden chairs, a vanity set and a beautiful desk. Although I don’t really have room to spare for new furniture, I would definitely pay the store a visit when looking for cheap and cute furniture for a post-grad apartment.
I stopped in to the Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company, which offers the obvious bread and cookies, but also has a café menu with sandwiches, soup and other lunch staples. Just looking for a quick snack, I picked up a gingersnap and a chocolate chip cookie. It was tough to choose with many other baked goods, including pastel-colored macaroons, but the chocolate chip with marshmallows baked on top was calling my name.
Before heading home, I stopped into the Troy Bulk Barn & Deli. This little grocery store sells bulk goods and, in many cases, without additional packaging. Even though I wasn’t looking to stock up on coconut oil or flour, I like to see what they’re selling. And when it’s cold and windy, I’ll take any excuse to get inside, even if it’s just for a minute or two.
About 40 minutes away from campus, Troy can be reached by taking McCreight to OH-41. You’ll pass by Bechtle and the mall, and if you keep going, after a little over 20 miles you’ll be in Troy. If you want to stop by Troy after a day in Tipp City, you can take I-70 to I-75 and Troy is a few exits past Tipp City. Have fun exploring, and stay warm!
