At the onset of this article, I would like to inform you, the reader, that this article is an opinion piece penned out of a recent realization that change is in the air around Wittenberg. King Solomon tells us in the Bible: “To everything, there is a season and a purpose for it under Heaven.”
As I’ve walked around campus this past weekend and spoken with alumni, faculty, students, staff members and even board members, I am convinced that change is in the atmosphere around Wittenberg. The changes that are looming around Witt are good in some senses, and they bring out the best in some people around campus.
The changes that I continue to refer to are what everyone seem to be talking about these days, which include but are not limited to: the new athletic complex, faculty and staff members leaving Witt and, with their reasons not being understood by many, the provost search. Lastly, what always seems to be the talk among current students: why is Pastabilities in Post 95 is only seasonal now?
President John F. Kennedy imparted that “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” After conversing with several alumni, it seems they’re in agreement that while a lot has changed for the better, it is always good to remember the good ol’ days back when you didn’t think anything would ever change.
The changes that currently are underway at Witt: do I agree or understand all of them? No. But, somewhere I read since we cannot change reality, we should change the way in which we view reality. So while I may not understand the changes underway currently, I am more than willing to view them through my compassionate, loving view of the world; also, by knowing that changing is never easy, but always possible. If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t be able to have the opportunity to afford some of the luxuries that we do, such as Starbucks, Wal-Mart, electricity and many other things that can be named.
Change is frightening; change is shocking and change is different. It also loving, good and should be done often for the same reasons babies diapers should be changed often.
