Donald Trump has been assumed to be the forty-fifth President of the United States as of early Wednesday morning, and the time of publication. Trump will be the first U.S. President with no government or military experience. Trump, a Republican, focused on campaigning in key states that eventually decided the presidency.
The election was close heading into the midnight hour, awaiting key states such as Pennsylvania and Michigan to officially declare the winner. Trump spent a great deal of time campaigning in these two states especially, while also spending a great deal of time in Ohio, trying to win over voters.
Trump won nearly 30 states by a combination of electoral votes and the popular vote. These states included Georgia, Florida, Texas and Wittenberg’s home state, Ohio.
Trump’s policy on education focuses on lowering the cost of college education, something Wittenberg students can take an interest in. Trump also hopes to continue defending America’s second Amendment rights by legalizing the right to bear arms in all 50 states.
In other news, Michigan has not voted Republican since 1988.
Trump announced his candidacy formally on June 16, 2015, and gradually gained momentum from there through his slogan, “Make America great again.”
After the results are finalized, Trump will take office in January of 2017. More coverage to come in next week’s issue.
