To many students on campus, the term “Wittenberg Bubble” has a shared meaning. The idea that we are so immersed in a certain culture and way of life almost seems like we are in our own little bubble. To many, this is good – it’s a nice reminder of how lucky we are to be on such a friendly, inspiring and unified community. But there is something to be said about the untapped resources and experiences outside this bubble.

When I suggested to freshman Kat Phillips that she venture outside the bubble, her response was startling.

“I don’t know, it’s a pretty good bubble to be in,” Phillips said.

I’d like to share my favorite ways to get out of the bubble and why it is so beneficial for the full Wittenberg experience.

The first step of getting out of the Wittenberg bubble is to plan an off-campus adventure with your friends or on your own. Depending on the season, there’s plenty of things to do within walking distance or a short drive. Plan a day trip to venture down Fountain Avenue or drive to Yellow Springs for a relaxing and unique getaway.

Depending on the season, the next step is to plot out restaurants, shops, galleries, theaters or any other attractions you want to indulge in off-campus. There are many restaurants located around campus like Mike & Rosy’s and those on Bechtle Avenue, but some students don’t realize there are also many good dining options off Fountain Avenue as well, such as Station 1, Bada Bing! Pizzeria and even a new local brewery, Martha Stewarts Brewery.

As far as the friendly, hippy town of Yellow Springs, there are many pubs, restaurants and pizza places like Peach’s and Ye Old Trail Tavern. There is something eclectic for everyone in Yellow Springs, even hiking for those who want or need outdoor time. And for those who need shopping outside of the Walmart or Kroger realm, there are many small business and boutiques in Yellow Springs with items you can’t find around campus. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good photo-op after a fun weekend? Stop at the Yellow Springs Sunflower Patch on your way home – the sunset provides perfect lighting.

If you aren’t able to travel far but still want to enjoy the outdoors that Springfield can provide, there are many opportunities within walking distance, especially during the warmer months. Check out the farmer’s market on Fountain Avenue or the concerts held at the stage behind Ferncliff, or even the nearby Buck Creek Park for some hiking.

Don’t feel trapped on campus, and don’t stay in the bubble for four years. Challenge yourself to try new things and I promise you won’t regret it. Not only does Wittenberg have a lot to offer, but so does Springfield and our surrounding communities. Don’t miss out!
