On the brisk and damp evening of Sept. 7, the Wittenberg Women’s Soccer Team kicked off its first home game of the 2017 season. The Tigers took on Wilmington College’s Quakers and after being on the road for the last four games, the Tigers were eager to have the home-field advantage.
While there are many eager freshmen that joined the Tiger soccer team, the most exciting new addition is Coach Katie Robinson. Robinson took over as head coach of the soccer team in February after leaving Ohio Northern University.
As the game started off with an aggressive Tiger offense; mid-fielders Leah Soutar, ’18, and Julia Smith, ‘18, worked efficiently with each other to get the ball closer to the Quaker net. But to no avail, the Tigers had to push and push until Kaitlyn Krieg, ‘21, scored in the 25th minute with a beautiful kick.
After the first and only goal of the game, only one other shot was taken in the first half. Krieg managed one more kick towards the goal but was blocked by Quaker goalie Ana Hosler, ’18.
At the half, Wittenberg was up by one with five separate attempts from the Quakers at the goal. All of those shots were either saved by Hannah Wilson, ’18, or the shots went to the far right of the goal.
The beginning of the second half started off with the Quakers wasting no time as the team sent a shot towards the goal 46 seconds in. But, that shot was saved by Wilson, making it a no-goal for the Quakers. The second half of the game was filled with tough defense for the Tigers side as the team worked together to keep the Quakers from making its way up the field to the goal. The Tigers managed to take one shot in the second half, made by Shannon Brueck, ’19, which was blocked by the Quaker goalie.
There were a total of three shots taken by the Quakers in the entirety of the second half. The Tigers held the Quakers all the way to the buzzer. At the end of the game, the score was 1-0 with the Tigers taking the team’s first home win of the season.
Rounding out her second consecutive shut-out of the season, Wilson had a total of six saves against the Quakers.
