The Wittenberg Women’s Basketball team started the week off with a game on Valentine’s Day where they played Ohio Wesleyan University’s Battling Bishops and won 68-56, putting them at 13-11 overall.
Now, Senior Day has come and gone for the Tigers. On Saturday, Feb. 17, the Tigers took on the College of Wooster Fighting Scots in their final regular season game and achieved a victory. The women’s team won 78-63, after honoring their two seniors: Haley Dannemiller and Becca Ziska. The team honored their two seniors with flowers, balloons, hugs and well-wishes before hitting the hardwood and taking their win.
The game started off with a couple of missed shots by the Tigers and the Fighting Scots, but turned around when Delaney Williams, ’21, made a jump shot. After those two points from Williams, the Tigers were scoring left and right. Ziska specifically made a layup and sank a 3-point shot with an assist from Alex Kiess, ’19. Ziska spent a total of five minutes on the court after removing her walking boot to finish out her senior season.
Sydney Mayle, ’19, worked hard on the floor from her layup to her 3-pointer, followed by two free throws and another shot behind the line later in the quarter. As the second quarter began, Williams and Mayle both made two more 3’s for the Tigers, putting them ahead 26-15.
Abigail Crum, ‘19, also had a good game with a layup and several assists in the first half of the game. The Tigers were up 41-33 going into the locker room.
Returning to the court, Korynne Berner, ’20, made a lay-up right off the bat, followed by a jump shot from Mayle. Berner and Mayle went back and forth both making lay-ups within 20 seconds of each other. After that, the Fighting Scots called a timeout and reset their lineup. That did not stop the Tigers as Williams and Mayle each scored again, followed by a 3-pointer from Berner.
In the fourth quarter, Amanda Raber, ’19, and Abigail Yunker, ’21, both made layups. These layups were accompanied by free throws from both Berner and Mayle, fwhich was followed by a shot from Kiess and another from Dannemiller. The Tigers were ahead 78-63 when the buzzer sounded, and senior day had wrapped up for the women’s team. This senior day win put the team at 14-11 overall this season.
Mayle had quite the game, capturing the lead in points with a whopping 26. Williams took the lead for rebounds and assists, coming in with eight and three, respectively. The Tiger’s field goal percentage was 47.3 and they had 32 points in the paint and 40 rebounds in total. The team made two fast-break points, and had 26 points scored from the bench and scored 10 points from turnovers.
This season the Tigers averaged about 39.6 rebounds per game, and 12.1 assists. Their 3-point percentage average sat at 29.6, with overall field goal percentage at 38.5. The average amount of points each game was 65.3.
The women’s basketball team will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. against Hiram College in Pam Evans-Smith Arena, for the NCAC Quarterfinal.
