At the crack of the bat, the final pitch of the game lands over the outfield wall for the walk-off home-run late on Saturday to give Tiger baseball their sixth win of the season.
Despite the two-run lead by Denison in the top of the 10th inning, Jack Siefert’s, ’21, clutch 370-foot home-run allowed Patrick Kenny, ‘19, and Parker Thompson, ‘21, to score, along with himself, in extra innings.
The Tigers overcame a two-run homer by the Big Red to win the second game of the day, 7-6. The win gave them their third win at home on the season on March 30.
Saturday marked Siefert’s return to the field after missing two weeks due to a concussion sustained during a loss to Otterbein on March 18.
Including his walk-off home-run, Siefert recorded three hits total on Saturday. On the field, the first baseman recorded 10 putouts and turned two double-plays.
After six hours and 47 minutes of baseball between the two games, the Highland Heights, Ohio-native recorded his first home-run of the year over the right-centerfield wall.
The rain held out for most of Saturday but the wind was a big factor in both games of the doubleheader. While the gusts game from the outfield wall in game one, the game two westerlies carried the ball out of the park on three accounts.
The game was sent into extra innings after a two-out single by Chase Carpenter, ‘19, to bring home his brother Gage Carpenter, ‘21, and tie the game up at four runs apiece in the bottom of the ninth.
Although blowing the save by giving up two-runs in the top of the ninth, Andrew Goodpaster, ‘18, recorded the win for the Tiger pitchers. The right-hander from Carlisle, Ohio recorded three strikeouts on two innings pitched.
Denison was on top for a majority of the game, leading 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Probst, ‘19, scored off of an error by the Big Red centerfielder to tie the game, 1-1. Next in the lineup was Tim Bates, ‘18, who cranked out a two-run homer to put Wittenberg ahead, 3-1.
The Tigers split their conference-opening doubleheader against the Big Red, 1-1, after losing the first game of the double header, 11-15. The Easter-weekend games now extend Wittenberg’s record to 6-14.
The Tigers couldn’t sustain their 6-5 lead going into the seventh, as the Big Red rallied eight runs that inning, including a grand-slam over left-center field by Denison’s Tyler Johnson given up by Goodpaster.
Wittenberg attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, but could only make a dent in the seven-run lead.
The Tigers were able to round out five runs in the seventh. Jeremy McAleese, ‘21, slid home on a wild Big Red pitch. Matt Baker, ‘19, cranked out an RBI-single then came home himself on a three-run homer by Kenny.
The red and white rotated through five pitchers in the high-scoring first game. Starting lefty Jace Barga, ’19, faced 25 batters, striking out five and recording only one earned run over five innings.
The Tigers will be traveling to Wabash on Wednesday, April 4, then on to Hiram on Saturday, April 7, to continue conference action. They will return to Carleton-Davidson Stadium on April 11 against the Adrian Bulldogs.
