Delta Sigma Phi’s national philanthropy with the American Red Cross stems from the fraternity’s involvement in relief for Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since Delta Sigma Phi and the American Red Cross have been introduced to one another, their collective motto has been “Blood, Sweat, and Cash” going along with Delta Sigma Phi’s motto “Better Men. Better Lives.”

Each year, Delta Sigma Phi chapters have donated their time to community service, and have hosted blood drives and fundraising events to support the American Red Cross and the services they provide. The American Red Cross states that it is among the biggest operation of its kind. Thirteen million volunteers worldwide provide disaster relief, blood, support for military families and other health services to one hundred million people. The blood, the time and the money donated through Delta Sigma Phi chapters supports the American Red Cross’ mission to help people worldwide.

Wittenberg University’s Delta Sigma Phi Beta Iota dhapter recently held a fundraising event. The chapter sold white ‘Wittfest 2018’ shirts for $10 each, and the buyer was then able to tie-dye their shirt on Wednesday, April 18 on the lawn between New Hall and the Benham-Pence Student Center.

According to the Wittenberg’s Delta Sigma Phi chapter president, Ethan Peck, ‘20, the chapter has held this event for the past three years and it has been an lucrative event as it “has a good public outlook, is in an accessible place and allows those who have bought shirts to participate.”

Many of the members of the chapter showed up to tie-dye their own shirts and to sell more at the event.

Top seller, Austin Gatwood, ‘20, said that this event is a “really good time and helps me know different people on campus and plus it’s for a good cause — the Red Cross.”

The members of Delta Sigma Phi continued to sell shirts by tie-dying more shirts after their event to sell later in the week. Overall, Delta Sigma Phi’s Beta Iota chapter sold around 100 shirts, making about $850 to donate to the American Red Cross and plan to continue this event in the future.
