On Saturday afternoon, Sept. 15, the Tigers took on Hanover College’s Panthers. Witt took their first loss at home when the Panthers snagged a lead early on, concluding the game 3-1.
The Tigers started off strong in the heat, with Shannon Brueck, ’19, taking the first shot of the game 50 seconds in. The next seven minutes were filled with shots from the Panthers who made their first goal of the game eight minutes in.
After taking their first water break of the day, the Tigers scored their one and only goal. Stephanie Angle, ’21, with the assist of Jasmine Evans, ’19, made a beautiful play placing the Tigers on the board. This was Angle’s first goal for the season and Evans’s first assist.
With 24 minutes left in the first half, the Panthers scored twice more giving them their 3-1 lead that they never relinquished.
Throughout the second half the Tigers fought tooth and nail to score on the Panthers, but Hanover wouldn’t budge. Every time Witt managed to move the ball up the field, Hanover would turn it back over and head straight for their goal only to be stopped by Kelly Corbin, ’19, and Emma Schewe, ’22. The two teams played evenly with neither gaining any ground but taking as many scoring opportunities as they could get throughout the remainder of the game.
The Tigers never let their fire go out, with Witt managing to take a total of two shots in the second, Evans taking the first and Megan Davis, ’19, taking the second with both going high above the goal.
Senior keeper, Corbin, made eight saves before freshman keeper, Schewe, subbed in during the second half making five more and giving the Tigers 13 in all. Schewe was one of six freshmen subbing in and out during the game, all of whom displayed a new grit and effort that was refreshing for a freshman class.
The Tigers managed to take six shots to the Panthers’ 26. Taking six corner kicks, Emily Thomas, ’19, and Missy Bernhardt, ’19, continuously put the ball into play. These two Tigers continuously put it all on the field and it can be seen in any play they make, from taking meticulous corner kicks to using their effective footwork on the turf they kept fighting for their team. Witt rounded out the game with seven fouls to Hanover’s three.
The Tigers currently sit 2-3-1 overall, with both of their wins being at home. Witt is averaging 12.2 shots per game, having a total of nine goals over the last six games.
On Tuesday night the Tigers will be heading to Otterbein University at 7:00 p.m. before returning home and beginning conference play by taking on Kenyon College at 1:00 p.m.
