Q: What are the best foods to buy for a dorm room?
A: Unfortunately, students are limited to microwaving and refrigerating food while living in the dorms; this limits the amount of cooking in the dorms and may lead to the Freshmen 15.
Some easy meals for students to “cook” are cereal, oatmeal, soup, instant mac n’ cheese, rice, ramen, frozen pizza, hot pockets, peanut butter sandwiches, lunch meat sandwiches, and quesadillas. Here you will have meals for breakfast, lunch or dinner if you need something quick and easy.
Some snack items that are often needed throughout the year include apples, oranges, bananas, salsa, carrots, goldfish, chips, popcorn, nuts, candy, chocolate and ice cream. While some of these snacks are healthy and will give you energy, others are more of comfort snacks—always good to have in case of emergency.
Make sure that even though you are in the dorms, you are trying to eat well-balanced meals and not to snack throughout the day; it will allow you to preform your best in school and other activities around campus.
Q: What is better working on or off campus?
A: This really depends on what you’re looking for in a job. Student employment has a lot of great opportunities that are on campus, which can be beneficial with juggling a schedule for work and school. Students employed on campus also have the option to put their pay, or a portion of their pay, towards their tuition.
Using Witt’s resources can help you land a job on or off campus, but in order to decide what is best for you, you should look at the pros and cons of each. On campus jobs are close and convenient; it allows you the opportunity to work shorter shifts between classes and make some extra money while being at school. Whereas, off campus jobs are typically further away, but can benefit the local community and get you outside the “Witt bubble.”
However, if there is a job off campus that you are really interested in that does not work through student employment, it never hurts to try to apply and work around your class schedule. They may have longer hours for work, which allows for more money.
