With 19 diverse pieces totaling almost two hours worth of dance performances, the spring Faculty and Senior Dance Concert was a hit! Audience members got to see wonderful farewell performances from graduating dancers, as well as some newer dancers that are performing in their first pieces.
The concert featured a variety of dances, including contemporary dances, an Irish dance, some modern hip hop, as well as more traditional pieces. The concert also welcomed guest dancers, Justin Arehart and James Sargent.
Not only did the concert showcase a variety of styles of dances, it also explored a variety of themes. One dance, “Behind Closed Doors,” choreographed by McKenzie Hopkins, shows an abusive relationship that develops as the dance goes on. Another piece, “Gaia’s Message,” choreographed by Sara Horsley, shows the changing relationship between nature and the busy lives people lead.
Part of the reason I love seeing the dance concert year after year is because of the music the dancers perform to. This year was no exception; “Happy” by Pharrell, “Work” by Ciara, and “Dark Horse” by Katy Perry instantly drew audience members in, while slower, softer songs let the choreography take center stage.
The concert ran last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in Chakere’s Theatre, and brought in large crowds for every performance.
