Another busy week for Tiger Sports, during which the university saw every fall sport in action in a myriad of key match ups for the Wittenberg squads.
The Tiger football squad won again on Saturday, extending its recent streaks. The 30-23 win for the Tigers made it four straight in the season, seventeenth straight in the conference, and made it 25 straight over the Denison Big Red. The connection of juniors Zach Culvahouse and Zach Jenkins proved bountiful for the Tigers again, as they connected on a pair of touchdown passes. The Tigers also continued to capitalize on special teams as Armon Murray, ’16, took a kick off back 89 yards in the first half. On the defensive side of the ball, the Tigers were led by reliable linebacker Evan Killilea, ’15, who notched nine tackles in the Tiger victory. Witt now prepares to travel to Wooster, Ohio, where they will take on the Fighting Scots Saturday.
After an eight-day layoff, the Tiger women’s soccer squad fell into a tough road contest at Denison. Senior Erika Rich’s early goal helped the Tigers claim an early lead. The Big Red then came back with three unanswered goals. The Tigers were able to respond and cut the lead to two, when Kyrie Bumpus, ’17, knocked in a corner kick off the foot of Tobie Weston, ’15. The Big Red out shot the visiting 11 by a margin of 31-8 on the day. The Tigers now look forward to taking on Hiram on Saturday, in senior recognition night.
The Men’s soccer squad also fell to the Big Red in Granville, by a score of 2-1. After trailing by one for most of the game, Alex Veuthey, ’18, drove home an equalizer in the sixty-fourth minute to draw the Tigers even. The Big Red would respond, however. Two late chances by the Tigers off the foot of Brian Boutin, ’15, and Teddy Price, ’18, yielded no goals for the Tigers, securing the win for Denison. The loss made the Tigers 0-3 in conference play, a trend they will look to reverse Wednesday when they take on DePauw.
Tiger volleyball players had another big day Saturday, notching two more wins, sweeping both of their matches. The Tiger first dispatched Washington and Lee 3-0, led by eight kills each from Kara Seidenstricker, ’16, and Kristina Fultz, ’16. Seidenstricker’s efforts also helped the Tigers defensively, as she added 12 digs, good for tops on the team. The Tigers then beat the visiting John Carrol in the second leg of Saturday’s tri-match. Seidenstricker added 11 more kills in the route. The Tigers next travel to Mount Union on Friday.
The Tiger Field Hockey team was able to pull its record even with two wins this weekend. The Tigers first claimed a hard-fought one goal win against a visiting Wooster team. Beth Warning, ’15, was able to rattle the cage three times, which proved to be enough in the 3-2 victory over the Fighting Scots. Warning’s dramatic third strike in the fifty-seventh minute broke a two-two tie. Sophomore keeper Laura Jansing notched six saves to help the Tigers maintain a one goal lead. The Tigers then turned around and were able to beat Oberlin by a score of 7-0 the next day. Six different Tigers notched goals in the win over Oberlin, including two off the stick of Kim Loofburrow, ’15. The Tigers now look to move north of .500 in a non-conference match up with Transylvania.
