Last Wednesday, the Wittenberg Men’s Basketball Team improved their record to 9-13 overall with a thrilling on-the-road win over DePauw. This conference win also put the Tigers one game away from a .500 conference record, with the team now at 7-8.
Entering half-time, Wittenberg faced a five-point deficit with the score 32-27. The Tigers rallied in the second half, limiting DePauw to scoring 21 points, with Wittenberg producing 27 more for their own score. The final score of the game found its way to 54-53, Wittenberg. The first match-up between the two Tiger teams was just as exciting, with our own Wittenberg Tigers coming out on top in overtime at 65-56.
Freshman Chris Sloneker led the team in scoring with 14 points. Sloneker also led the defense with seven rebounds. Sophomores Shane Edwards and Jaelin Williams also joined Sloneker in double digits, pitching in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Edwards and Williams also contributed four rebounds a piece, joined by junior Alex Fultz in this statistic. Wittenberg out-rebounded DePauw 37-32.
In the first half, the Tigers shot an impressive 54.5 percent from the field. Overall, the Tigers shot 48.8 percent from the field, one of the highest field percentages on the season. In comparison, DePauw shot just 31.1 percent from the field on the night.
DePauw managed to force 18 turnovers from Wittenberg on the night, and only gave up seven of their own.
This victory follows a home win over Oberlin last Saturday. On Feb. 14, the “Witt-Woo” rivalry took place once again at Pam Evans Smith Arena. At the last match-up, the Tigers produced their best offensive game of the year, scoring 97 points and shooting almost 60 percent from the field. These impressive numbers fell short, though, as Wooster managed to put up 104 points.
