Greek Philanthropy events are coming up all over campus in the next few weeks. Take a look at a couple of the first events happening with the members of the Kappa Delta and Delta Gamma Sororities; come out and support some great causes:
Come have Mac and Cheese with the women of Kappa Delta on Thursday, Mar. 5. The Mac and Cheese dinner will take place at the KD house at 602 N. Wittenberg Avenue, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This is the Kappa Delta’s Shamrock Event for the year. Tickets for the event will be $5, and they will be sold outside of the CDR the week of the event; you can also buy your tickets from any Kappa Delta sister. There are also vegan and gluten free options for the meal.
The money raised from this event will go to the Kappa Delta’s local and national organizational associations. The Rocking Horse Center is based in Springfield, and is a medical center where new mothers and single parents can go to learn how to care for their young children. The Rocking Horse Center also offers medical care for young children. Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA) is the national organization that proceeds will also go to. This is an organization whose goal is to lessen the amount of child abuse in America by teaching parents preventative measures. PCAA educates parents on what constitutes as abuse as well as stepping in situations where there is abuse.
During the event, the Kappa Delta members will be selling pinwheels that the PCAA will supply for them. These proceeds will go directly back to the PCAA as a part of their Pinwheel for Prevention campaign.
The Kappa Deltas are hoping for a turn out much like the previous ones, as the event grows each year.
VP Community Service Alyssa Tomcho, said: “It all goes to really great organizations, so we’d love to see a lot of people there, not just to support Kappa Delta, but to support such great causes.”
The members of Delta Gamma will also be holding their annual Anchor Slam on Wednesday, Mar. 18. Anchor Slam is a basketball tournament that will take place in the HPER center, and is open to any campus member. To sign up, teams will need five players, and each player will have to pay $5 to participate. If basketball isn’t your forte, sign up because all the players get pizza.
The money raised from Anchor Slam will benefit the organization Service for Sight. Service for Sight is the Delta Gamma foundation that helps supply money to the visually impaired for costs that they cannot cover on their own. The foundation will pick a group of people or a person to donate the money to once it has been raised. In the past, for example, the money has gone to a family that could not afford an eye surgery for their child. There will be a booth at the event explaining the philanthropy in more depth that people are encouraged to stop by and check out.
During Anchor Slam, there will be a raffle going on that will have gift cards and other donated items from local Springfield businesses. If you don’t want to try your luck at basketball, you can see how lucky you might be during the raffle.
The Delta Gamma girls hope to continue the success of this event and have set a monetary goal of $1,800 dollars to beat last years $1,700. Senior Kiah Murray offered up a couple words to encourage people to come and play because “it’s a ballin’ good time!”
