Next week, voting will take place for the next Alma Lux and Mater students. A special committee selects each candidate, and every year, the student body votes on its representatives.
According to Angela Fairbanks, executive assistant of student development, “The Alma Mater and Alma Lux are the highest honors bestowed upon a student at Wittenberg. Alma Mater has been given since 1921. Alma Lux has been given since 2003. Students, faculty or staff nominate candidates.”
To obtain this honor, the candidates “must possess depth of character and show consistent scholarship, leadership, service and concern for the community.”
The following short biographies list only some of the accolades these candidates have —
For Alma Lux:
~ Gregory Heine is an accounting and finance double major. Heine is involved in the men’s basketball team. He also is or has been involved in a variety of clubs and activities, including Circle K and Accounting Club, among others, and work as a Resident Advisor.
~ Joseph Johnson is an economics and east Asian studies double major and Chinese minor. Johnson is vice president of Beta Theta Pi, treasurer of Student Senate and runs for both the cross country and track teams. He also is or has been involved in a variety of clubs and activities, including Emerging Leaders and Interfraternity Council, among others, and is a Presidential Scholar.
~ Jacob Murray is a political science and philosophy double major. Murray is or has been involved in a variety of clubs and activities, including Jazz Ensemble, Emerging Leaders, No Woman Left Behind and Beta Theta Pi, among others, and is a Peer Mentor.
~ Trevor Villegas is a marketing major and communications minor. Villegas is president of the Interfraternity Council. He also is or has been involved in a variety of clubs and activities, including Phi Kappa Psi and work as an Orientation Assistant.
~ Harrison Wood is a physics major and biology and chemistry double minor. Wood is a runner for the track team. He also is or has been involved in a variety of clubs and activities, including Hall Government, Weaver Chapel Association and Lambda Chi Alpha, among others.
For Alma Mater:
~ Emma Brems is a chemistry major and music minor. Brems is vice president of the PanHellenic Council and a Community Advisor in Polis Hall. She also is or has been involved in a variety of clubs and activities, including Kappa Delta sorority, Gender Sexual Diversity Alliance and Wittenberg Singers, among others.
~ Megan Heitkemper is a math major and physics minor. Heitkemper is the treasurer of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, and is a runner for both the cross country and track teams. She also is or has been involved in a variety of clubs and activities, including Ivy Ring, Emerging Leaders and Omicron Delta Kappa, among others.
~ Madeline Kraft is a music and management double major. Kraft assists in events for Union Board and is on the female swimming team. She also is or has been involved in a variety of clubs and activities, including being a Student Success Ambassador, Orientation Assistant, and Gamma Phi Beta member, among others.
~ Callan Swaim is a Spanish and marketing double major. Swaim is the president of the Spanish Club and is on the women’s volleyball team. She also is or has been involved in a variety of clubs and activities, including the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, Gamma Phi Beta and Class Cabinet, among others.
~ Kayla Villegas is a communications and marketing double major and a journalism minor. Villegas is the Communications Director for Delta Gamma sorority, Greek senator for Student Senate and works on special projects in Union Board. She also is or has been involved in a variety of clubs and activities, including membership in the Class Cabinet, working as a Resident Advisor and helping with the Promise Neighborhood, among others.
