In the last few weeks, Wittenberg students were notified of different technological updates that are being made on campus. Most recently, changes have been made in the mail room and with the student email system.
The upgrade in the Solutions Center is a new software that helps to log all packages electronically. For students, this means that they will no longer receive a paper package slip in their mailbox. Instead, students will be sent an email when packages arrive for them. To pick up packages, students will have to present their student ID, along with the email notification. In the email sent to the students about the upgrade in the mail room, Director of Student Activities Elizabeth Ames said that she believed the new update in the mail room would be a great asset to the service that is provided to the students.
The Solutions Center also sent out an email regarding an update for student emails and their computer systems. The Solutions Center is switching the email system to Microsoft Office 365 for students and is heading to the “cloud” for storage for the email system. A particular feature that students will be able to take advantage of in this upgrade is the offer that gives students greater storage for email, going from 400 MB up to 50,000 MB.
“It will be so nice not having to go through my email once a week deleting emails so that I don’t go over the limit,” junior Kara Seidenstricker said.
Another benefit of the new upgrade for students’ computers includes the OneDrive storage for students. With OneDrive, students are given 1 TB of web storage that is available to them on campus, off campus and on electronic devices such as smartphones. Another part of these new computer updates is that Information Technology Services (IT) has made all of these updates absolutely free to students.
Rick Mickool, the chief information officer at IT, said that for the past year, IT has been planning and working on the move to Office 365.
“We had to update and install systems that now allow us to better integrate with internet-based applications and services like the new Microsoft email system,” Mickool said.
He also said that these upgrades are just a few of the new services that are being made available that will constantly be updated with features and functionality for students.
