There’s no better way to start the year off than by dancing off those extra calories. The Get Fit Witt program hosted its first Zumba class of the year this past Friday.
Taught by Sierra Sanchez, ‘19, students were welcomed to come relax after a long week on the chapel lawn. Wittenberg’s radio station, WUSO, DJ’d the event for the dancers.
“Zumba really is a feel-good activity,” Sanchez said. “I think that’s what draws so many people to it.”
Zumba is a very unique style of aerobic exercise that is inspired by various styles of Latin American Dance. On top of a great exercise, Zumba is a great way for students to get acquainted with some Latin American culture.
“What I love most about Zumba itself, besides how much more enjoyable it is than conventional cardio exercise, is its connection to different styles of Latin dance and its unique blend of music from different languages,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez has been involved in Zumba for several years now. Sanchez was a jazz dancer through her junior year of high school and when she noticed that her dance studio offered Zumba, she couldn’t help but get involved.
“I got my Zumba certification after my senior year of high school,” Sanchez said. “So I’ve been teaching for two and a half years.”
The Get Fit Witt program also offers numerous other activities for students to burn some extra calories including beginner and upper level yoga.
