This past Saturday, Wittenberg’s David B. and Georgiana S. Albright Tennis Complex played host to both men’s and women’s tennis as the programs took on the thunder of Trine University.
The day started at noon with the women’s team and head coach Tyler Johnston picking up the team’s second victory of the season with a 7-2 win over the Trine Thunder.
The Tigers started things off by winning two of the three doubles matches before dominating the singles portion 5-1.
Doubles partners Sarah Gallup, ‘20, and Harunya Ravidran, ‘21, proved they are a force to be reckoned with as the pair picked up their second straight win in both of their doubles and singles matches.
Oliva Boland, ‘20, and Carli Milano, ‘19, also had their second straight win as partners, while Milano earned her first singles victory of the 2017 season.
“2-0 is a great feeling and starting the season out strong is a big momentum advantage,” Gallup said. “I think we played great as a team; there were some exciting matches and its always fun to beat a team who we lost to last year.”
Wittenberg’s men’s team then opened its season, but were unable to pull out the victory as the team lost 7-2. Despite the loss, the Tigers played well as the team picked up both of its victories during the doubles portion of the afternoon.
The Tigers started the day off hot, as the duo of Luke Minard, ‘19, and Martin Mora, ‘18, picked up their first victory of the season with a 8-2 win, while the pairing of Caleb Astwood, ‘19, and Kieren Thomas, ‘19, continued to build on the momentum with an 8-5 decision.
The women’s team will be returning to action on Sept. 19 when the team travels to Otterbein to take on the Cardinals, while the men’s program won’t compete again until Jan. 21 against the University of Dayton.
